斯坦因，原籍匈牙利，是一名犹太人，1904年入英国籍。考古学家、艺术史家、语言学家、地理学家和探险家，国际敦煌学开山鼻祖之一。他是今天英国与印度所藏敦煌与中亚文物的主要搜集者，也是最早的研究者与公布者之一。他的许多著作至今仍是敦煌吐鲁番学研究者的案边必备之书。曾经分别于1900-1901年、1906-1908年、1913-1916年、1930-1931年进行了著名的四次中亚考察，考察重点是中国的新疆和甘肃，所发现的敦煌吐鲁番文物及其他中亚文物是今天国际敦煌学研究的重要资料。
